Hawzah News Agency | Imam Sajjad, peace be upon him, addresses the Almighty God in Sahifa Sajjadiyyah, saying:
«وَ انْظُرْ إِلَیَّ وَ انْظُرْ لِی فِی جَمِیعِ أُمُورِی فَإِنَّکَ إِنْ وَکَلْتَنِی إِلَی نَفْسِی عَجَزْتُ عَنْهَا.»
“(O God!) Look upon me and oversee all my affairs; for if You were to leave me to myself, I would be incapable of any good.” (Supplication no. 22)
Commentary:
The moment of human destruction is the moment one becomes separated from their Beloved; for to be separated from the Beloved is to enter the camp of falsehood, inevitably leading to ruin.
In every daily prayer, a Muslim addresses the Almighty ten times with the verse: “اهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِیمَ” (Guide us to the Straight Path).1 When we place this verse alongside another from the Holy Quran, a profound meaning emerges. Prophet Hud, peace be upon him, said to the idolaters: “إِنَّ رَبِّی عَلَیٰ صِرَاطٍ مُسْتَقِیمٍ” (Indeed my Lord is on a straight path.)2
This signifies that the ‘Straight Path’ is precisely where God resides—it is the realm of His satisfaction and pleasure.
Therefore, “Guide us to the Straight Path” means: “O Allah! Let me be with You; let me constantly revolve around Your presence. Let Your pleasure be my pleasure, Your wrath be my wrath, and Your will be my will.” For even a fleeting moment of separation from You implies weakness and impotence, ultimately leading to nothing but misguidance and destruction. Indeed, how could anyone be separated from God and still taste the sweetness of true felicity?
It is for this reason that Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, prayed to the Almighty God:
«اَللَّهُمَّ ... اِسْتَعْمِلْنِی فِی طَاعَتِکَ.»
“O God! Employ me in Your obedience.” (Wasail al-Shi'a, v. 11, p. 383)
This means: “O Allah, guide all my affairs toward Your pleasure. Direct my desires, my tastes, my choices, my goals, and my path—let all of these be exactly as You will, and in none of them, leave me to myself.”
